Sterling Forest State Park will be participating in the First day hike program. Participants will hike a 4 mile loop around Sterling Lake. The trail is easy/moderate and should take between 2-3 hours to complete. Participants can meet up at 9:00 am in front of the visitors center. The hike is pet friendly as long as they are leashed.

Preregistration is required by calling the park office at 845-351-5907. Office hours are 8:00-4:30 7 days a week. If there is a lot of snow /ice on the ground we may have to cancel by calling those who have registered.

Begin 2017 with a First Day Hike at Minnewaska! Come for a stimulating and refreshing two mile snowshoe hike to two scenic overlooks in the Peter's Kill Area, which feature stunning views in clear weather. While the distance is relatively short, there are a few moderate hills, which may be difficult for some. Snowshoes may be rented from the Park Preserve Office, located at the Peter's Kill Area, for $5 per person for this program. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike and the hiking destination may change. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Meet in the Peter's Kill.

Begin the New Year with a First Day Hike at Sam's Point! What better way to start off 2017 than with an invigorating snowshoe outing for the entire family? Join us for an approximately three mile trek through the scenic Park Preserve. Snowshoes may be reserved for this program for a fee of $5 per person. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. This program is being offered at the Sam's Point Area in Cragsmoor.

This self-guided hike will take place in the Summit Area in the Red House side of the park. The off-trail hike, approximately 2 miles in length and easy to moderate in intensity, begins at the Summit Warming Hut, follows scenic ridge line to Stone Tower, then loops back to the Warming Hut. Interpretive points of interest can be found along the way. Come listen to birds, feel the warmth of the sun or the coldness of the snow. This 1st Day Hike will run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participants should begin the hike by stopping in the Summit Warming Hut to sign in and pick up a trail map. Be sure to dress in appropriate winter hiking apparel. Weather permitting, snowshoes and trekking poles are encouraged. After the hike, be sure to swing back in the warming hut for a New Year's Social with chili and warm beverages provided by the Friends of Allegany State Park.

At 10:00 a.m. on New Years Day, you and your family and friends are invited to meet at at the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park's Brook Road parking lot in the town of Chili. A walk one mile south will take us to the best preserved c.1840 Genesee Valley Canal lock on the entire trail. A walk two miles north will take us to the double-arch Genesee Valley Canal culvert which carried Black Creek under the old canal, a pretty special artifact built more than 170 years ago!

Join the Friends of FDR on a two-mile round trip hike to enjoy the progress made in connecting the park to Baldwin Road. This hike is a great introduction to a part of the park that has been seldom visited. Enjoy a scenic area by a newly constructed bridge and views out over Crom Pond. Learn about a bridge building project next spring and how you can join the fun. Given the number of people who have come on previous First Day Hikes and the narrow trails for a portion of the route, please no dogs. If two miles seems too far, the walk to the bridge and back is 0.8 mile. Meet at the north end of the swimming pool parking near the bench by the white trail at 10:30. Dress in layers with hat and gloves. Leader will show up regardless of weather.

For all of the hikes, it is suggested you dress for the weather. If snow gets "knee deep", you may find it helpful to also bring your own snowshoes. (We will have a few snowshoes that may be borrowed.)

The hikes are scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm at The Humphrey Nature Center. Participants are urged to arrive half an hour early to register. Hot Chocolate & Cookies will follow at 3:00 pm. Two levels to choose from:

1) Families with younger children Winter Nature Walk with highlight: Letchworth CSI – Who Done It: Journey on a wooded loop less than one mile on nearly level terrain near The Humphrey Nature Center past, frozen bogs and the Trout Pond.

2) Families with older children Winter Nature Walk with highlight: Exotic Trees from Other Lands and State & National Champions: Two mile loop to Inspiration Point the Glen Iris Fountain and Middle Falls with more than 200' descent and 200' ascent along trails, roads and stairs.

If we have snow people can bring snowshoes. People can rent our snowshoes for $3/pair. We have children's and adult snowshoes. Well behaved dogs on 6 foot leashes are allowed. Please dress for the weather.

The exact trail we will cover will be determined by the staff member leading the program.

The hike will begin by heading down to Taughannock Falls for a group picture. We will then return on the gorge trail (1 ½ miles) and head up the North Rim Trail to the Overlook (2 ½ miles). From the Overlook we will head over to the Multi-Use trail, making a brief stop at the warming hut and then return to beginning of the Gorge trail on the North Rim Trail (5miles).

Starting from the Peter's Kill Area, participants will hike briefly on the Awosting Falls Connector Footpath and then journey up the scenic Awosting Falls Carriage Road, which has a gentle incline as it approaches Awosting Falls. If weather conditions are cold enough, a frozen volcano-like structure forms at the base of the waterfall and changes with every added drop of water. Snowshoes may be rented from the Park Preserve Office, located at the Peter's Kill Area, for $5 per person for this program. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Meet in the Peter's Kill.

Begin the New Year with a First Day Hike at Sam's Point! What better way to start off 2017 than with an invigorating snowshoe outing for the entire family? Join us for an approximately three mile trek through the scenic Park Preserve. Snowshoes may be reserved for this program for a fee of $5 per person. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. This program is being offered at the Sam's Point Area in Cragsmoor.

Dress appropriately for weather and wear comfortable shoes for hiking

Participants (walkers, cyclists, runners,) can meet at either the west or east entrance gates to the Walkway at 2 p.m.

Choice of 1.25 or 2.5 mile walk, ride, or run

Pre-registration is NOT necessary but we would appreciate interested hikers to pre-register at https://walkway.org/ so we know approximately how many will attend and can share additional information about day of event amenities.

All participants will be entered in a raffle to win tickets to Walkway's Firework Celebration July 4, 2017, family memberships, and Walkway apparel. Raffle will be held at center of the Walkway at 2:30 p.m. when both groups (west side and east side) meet at the center of the Walkway Hot chocolate will also be served.
