Schodack Island State Park, in conjunction with the Friends of Schodack Island, will host a wintertime hike along the orange trail on Jan. 1, 2015 at 1pm to welcome the new year. This event is free and open to the public; but reservations are required by calling the Schodack Island Office, (518) 732-0187.

Participants will meet their guide Dan Odell, the president of the Friends of Schodack Island, at the main comfort station near the parking lot at 1pm and then walk (or snowshoe, depending on the conditions) to the ice house chimney and foundation; a round trip of 5 miles. Snowshoe rentals are limited, but are available for a $5 fee if necessary. This approximately 5 mile hike is recommended for ages 5+.

The Miller and Witbeck Ice House can be seen on local area maps from 1891 to 1915. The building once stored thousands of pounds of ice from the frozen Hudson River awaiting transport to New York city where it was then shipped around the world. Today only a small portion of the ice house remains; most dominant is the chimney from the powerhouse where a steam engine provided power to run a conveyer belt from the water's edge into the storage area.

Hot cocoa and cookies will be served at the completion of the hike, compliments of the Friends of Schodack Island.
