The New York State Park Police provide essential police services consistent with the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic
Preservation's mission-to provide safe and enjoyable recreational opportunities for New York State residents and visitors.
Currently the following positions make up the core of the NY State Park Police unit: (select the title for a complete

Park Police Officers (select the title for additional information, including the status of the latest recruiting process)
State Park Police officers are permanent full-time Police Officer positions and appointment is made after a competitive
process that includes a NYS Civil Service exam.
State Park Police officers patrol in marked police cars, four-wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, bicycles, boats, personal
water crafts, and in one region, horses, as well as on foot. In addition, State Park Police assist park users, make arrests,
conduct criminal and non-criminal investigations, and provide emergency services. State Park Police also provide special services
including marine law enforcement and education duties on New York waterways, snowmobile enforcement and education, high angle and
swift water rescue teams.
Seasonal Park and Recreation Public Safety Rangers Qualifications (pdf)
The New York State Park Police hire seasonal State Parks and Recreation Public Safety Rangers (PSR). PSR's provide general public safety services throughout the State in support of
the State Park Police. This is a seasonal-only position, generally from late May to Labor Day. Public Safety Rangers are subject to the provisions of the Security Guard Act of 1993,
are unarmed and have neither peace nor police officer status. PSR's will be assigned to patrol park facilities and grounds, maintain order, enforce park ordinances/regulations, and
answer questions from park patrons. On a situational basis, PSR's may also assist with search and rescue operations and marine patrol.
Note:OPRHP is currently taking applications for Seasonal Park and Recreation Public Safety Ranger positions for the 2016 operating season; May, 2016 through September, 2016.
